Introduction to the New English Edition of the Roman Missal

As from Saturday 10th September, we have been using the New Translation of the Mass. New Mass books are now at the back of the Church. Please return them to the back of the Church after Mass. They are for use in Mass and should not be taken away - please look after them as they need to last several years.

Whilst I was away …I read a little about the ‘making of translations-there is no end!’ “Translation it is that openeth the window, to let in the light.” This is a quote from the authorised version of the Bible in their preface of 1611.
This year marks the 500th Anniversary. The first English Catholic edition appeared in 1582-known as the Douay Version, which is a place in northern France where many exiled Catholics had lived.
We know that many expressions came from the authorised version, “Out of the mouths of babes”, “how the mighty have fallen”, “the root of the matter”, “a thorn in the flesh” these have now become common in English.
We are now asked to listen to a new translation in our liturgy. Let us do so with the energy & delight of our predecessors so that we may give greater glory to Almighty God.
We hope to see more clearly the context, content & communication. Signs & symbols will be helpful “and with your Spirit” speaks to the ‘God bit’ in us.
We acclaim Christ for what he did. “We proclaim Your Death, O Lord, and profess Your Resurrection.”
Today let us gently use our Mass books & Mass cards in the Church so that in time they will not be necessary.
May the Holy Spirit guide us all.

This page of the website contains information that was issued for preparing parishioners for the introduction of the New English edition of the Roman Missal. Although the Missal is now in use, it may be helpful to have access to these documents.
